"oon up in ky!" she yaps,

agog for confirmation;

imparts further marvels:

"eyes!" marked by miniature digits,

and furthermore, astonishingly - "two!"

Teeters on my affirmation

then waddles off to new wonders.

Trussed in a highchair

will scatter tit-bits, blueberries

and pipe for "more".

Cuckoos for spilling spoons,

delights in dribbles, smears and splats;

engages with "goos" and "gaas";

endures an aftermath of wet-wipes.

Penguins are "mi-mis";

trains are "noo-noos";

cats are "meow-meows";

We speak in blobs, blurting sound,

discovering stubs and stumps of words.

I rummage in her rattle-bag

to voice my heart. Hush now.

Thinking Motif
It is quite possible the trees require

little attention — it is only wood

and ants and leaves and bark.

Besides, the way the cat-tails frame

each puddle of pond

there’s a better poem disclosed

in water. But maybe the trees

are in need of gazing,

and that is why they spread and shake

and whisper. They bud —
and we inhale, culling one moment

from another. Maybe there are no trees,

only blobs of leafy anchors;

projections of twigs and nests

where nothing owls float in nothing skies.
It is only words not real conversation,

you’ll whittle what you want

and drop the shavings to earth,

unable to grasp the beauty of a tree

in the company of flames. ... more

I revise my lips over

and over edit them until

they are my very own.

Thin unworthy lips

that graze on yours

until there is blood

or spit and wine

the soft flesh lingers

like old Jack Daniels

in a square bottle or

a fat husky throaty laugh

stolen from your dad.

At last when they are

the lips that could possibly

tell my story they are

entitled to verse.

A feeling twists around

my teeth chink against

the glass. The swig slugs

my uvula rattles around

my teeth chink against

the glass. Again. You

smile. Your eyes trace

my shadow on the floor.

Rough draft from beneath

the door becomes a final

copy. We both turn it in.

Our lips, unworthy, yet

entwined. ... more

Forced down from Eternity’s Mountain
You were misshapen into an image
By the hands of inferior, infantile souls,
Who were barren of your immortal wisdom.

They demanded your attributes
To be blackened by their own desires;
And these resentful, envious children
Placed pieces of your burning coals
Into pottery much too crude for your magnificence.

And Your glory faded into ashes. ... more
